Why Are Writers Becoming More Powerful Than Advertising Agencies?

Because you don’t open junk mail. Because you don’t call back telemarketers (do you even have a landline?).  Because you don’t see commercials (Tivo). Because you don’t hear commercials (Pandora / iPod).  Because you don’t see billboards (people aren’t even looking at the road anymore with all that texting).

But how many times do you do a Google search everyday?

Because most of the Internet is reading based.

Because Google can’t see inside video or music – yet.

Because getting to the top of Google’s ranks is largely based on backlinks. A backlink is a word in an article that links back to your website (example: So you need an advertising jingle?). Because if an article is good enough, it is spread through news and social media and therefore spreads your backlinks.

Therefore, writers have the power to get you to the top of Google’s rankings and advertising agencies do not (unless they hire good writers).

Start-Up 2.0: Fastest Way to Launch a Web Project (under $10K)

1) So You Have A Concept – Research competition and market using Google search, Twitter Search, and Blog Search at Technorati.  Set up Google Alerts and Tweetdeck alerts to monitor the industry keywords during your start-up. Don’t know the keywords? Use Google Keyword Tool to pick out the best ones.

2) Domain Name – Get a domain name based on what you are calling your project.  Use GoDaddy – $10.00/yr.  Try to get the “.com” or think of something clever using the newer endings such as “.ly.”

Go ahead and set up an email through GoDaddy using your new domain name.  Either “Yourname@newdomainname.com” or “Info@newdomainname.com” and then forward this to your current email system.

NOTE: Be sure to check the Trademark Electronic Search System to ensure your name is not already trademarked and in use for your industry.

3) Get Twitter NameTwitter – Free

4) Form single person LLC and get EIN for taxes (employment ID number) – LegalZoom –  $150.00-$360.00 plus state fees. You don’t have to form your company under your project name.  In fact, it’s almost better if you don’t so that you can launch other projects under your company name later without having to link to your first project name.   Don’t worry about the operating agreement for now if you are operating alone, you only need an operating agreement if you have partners.  If this is the case, look at some sample agreements found online and discuss with your partners which is the most appropriate.  You don’t have to file the operating agreement with the State, it’s mainly to show how the partners interact with each other in regards to the business.  If you and your partner(s) can’t agree you should reconsider working together or find a lawyer to help – expensive.  (NOTE: you can actually wait on this step and see if your project is successful before forming a comany.  Its important though to form a legal entity such as an LLC at some point to protect your personal assets in case someone sues you in regards to something that happened with your project.)  Recommend reading Nolo’s Quick LLC. Another resource is here: Free legal documents for entrepreneurs.

5) Trademark Project NameLegalZoom $200.00 – $500.00.  Now that you’ve gotten your domain name and matching Twitter name, go ahead and Trademark the term so that nobody else can use your name.  You can register your trademark now and select the option that you’ll begin use of it in the future.  Just trademark the common lower-case version of your name.

6) Logo Design99Designs – $300.00-$600.00.  Use 99Designs to prepay and pick a winning design from multiple samples submitted by top designers from around the world.  This saves you the time of looking over portfolios to find a designer you think is right and also saves you from the possibility you won’t like their designs when they are completed.

7) Web / Application Pages Design99Designs – $600.00-$1000.00

8) Twitter Page Design – You can use something like Twitbacks or pay 99designs for something more professional – $100.00-$300.00

NOTE: Keep all branding consistent

9) Programmer – Place add on Craigslist for Ruby on Rails (RoR) developer in your local town.   Bid project out based on designs – $4,000.00 – $7,000.00.  Use a standard non-disclosure form if you’d like, you can find a standard form pretty easily by searching online.   You can also propose a Joint-Venture with the developer to take equity as opposed to cash up-front to program your concept.   Joint-Venture forms are available on Legalzoom as well or from one of their affiliates.  RoR developers can build most web based projects.  If you are going more specific like a Twitter API project or Facebook application, you may need to look for a specialist in that specific area.  Elance.com is another venue for locating developers.  Remember to negotiate and always counter-offer! To see some top sites built in Rails click here. For Ruby developers in the Nashville area, contact Josh Crews who runs the Nashville Ruby on Rails Meet-up Group.

10) Coordinate with your developer using Drop Box to share files – Free.   Other resources are Google Groups/ Google Docs for coordination – Free.  This is also a good time to write your business plan if you plan on seeking investment.  Take your design samples that you have from 99designs and use them for visuals in the business plan. Nobody ever said a business plan has to be ugly, use your graphics to get your point across. There are plenty of resources out there for info on how to write a business plan.  I recommend writing the plan yourself as opposed to outsourcing it to a business plan writing company.  These things are a pain but if you write it yourself you can pitch it like a champion (because you wrote it!).

11) Set up Social Media using Ping.  Use your project name and logo to register for all social sites and blogs listed in Ping including setting up a  Facebook page.   (You already should have a Twitter, if not – see step 3).  Now you can post updates on your project to all these social networks at once using Ping.fm.  Go ahead…create some buzz!

12) Host and test the website or application on a server, recommend Heroku – free on minimal server.  Your developer should get all this set up for you.

13) Press Release – If your project is ready, launch it and submit your concept to appropriate industry blogs and review sites. You can outsource this to a PR Company or maybe just locate a good PR person on Twitter to help you out.  Cost varies but it’s free to do yourself if you can write.

14) If the project takes off, good for you!  If not, try a different one using the steps above except now you already have your company formed.

Cheapest possible = $5,370.00

Most expensive choices = $9,780.00

SALESFORCE TWITTER

Tonight I had one of those “I have an idea” moments. It started because I’ve noticed my computer operating slower these days and I suspect I have a virus of some sort infecting it. I used to have anti-virus software but erased everything a few weeks back during a ‘FORMAT C’ cleansing of my aging laptop. So its time to re-install some new anti-viral software but I wanted to avoid NORTON as I remember it completely gumming up my system and it’s interface was totally confusing.

So what did I do, a GOOGLE search of course. I searched for something along the lines of ‘best anti-virus software’ and then began to look over the results. I have taken a few SEO courses recently online including “Take Over Page One” from those guys in Australia so I didn’t just click on the first link I saw like the good old days. I actually read over each link and especially scrutinized the URL address. I began to realize that everything on the first page was CRAP. Everything was specific companies using SEO techniques to get their product to the front page. In other words, I didn’t trust any of the links I saw because I was looking for information and reviews from real people.

Instead of refining my search or clicking through the next couple of pages, I went direct to TWITTER.  I posted my question and got a response to check out fsecure from one of my followers.

So what’s the idea? Well, we are now moving beyond Google in terms of search options. Twitter is becoming the Human network for information – live, fast, up-to-date information. Companies are slowly coming on-board realizing this power – Social Media Marketing. Its such an easy concept…If a different anti-virus company had been searching for terms such as Anti-Virus software, they may have come across my post as well and responded. They could have personally pointed me toward their product and maybe created a sale.

Companies have been slow to adopt though and in the recent market I doubt companies are running out to hire a Social Media Marketing expert to handle this ‘twitter thing’.  SALESFORCE TWITTER to the rescue!  A company could be created that sold your product on Twitter for you.  It’s easy to find the leads, just set up TWILERTS for any terms concerning the products and use SEARCH.TWITTER.COM to keep an eye out.  Once the lead is found they are then put in contact with one of your clients.  Ex – You see someone mention MY TOASTER JUST EXPLODED! and you rep for a designer toaster company.  You could @lead with a small blurb about needing a new toaster and a link to the toaster company.  The toaster company could track this link and pay you for any sales that occured.  Without the link it may be too difficult to actually track each lead.

You don’t even have to go that far.  I could probably do this right now with my Amazon Affiliate account.  I could pick out a few products I’ve enjoyed using and then start searching for leads with a link back to Amazon.  You can sell any product you get an affiliate link to and you already have the leads in search.

Professional Content Rebroadcaster

Is there a name for someone who is building their personal brand user Twitter? Like Guy Kawasaki is using it to promote his website Alltop.com, but he often Twitters content that has nothing to do with his site? Why is this? Because he is Twittering interesting content that he knows his followers will enjoy. He is rebroadcasting content that he finds on the web that he knows his followers will appreciate.

Guy Kawasaki is a professional Content Rebroadcaster. He is a giant filter for content around the web. The same could be said for Scobleizer and many others using Twitter and Friendfeed to push content they find around the web.

With the creation of a new service called Adjix, this could become a profitable job for someone who can find the best content. Forget promoting your personal business like most rebroadcasters do, now you can profit from the rebroadcasting itself.

Adjix allows rebroadcasters to attach their own ads to landing pages they link to.   So if I find an interesting article my followers will enjoy, I can pass the link to them using Adjix which will stick a small ad of my choice to the top of the article page. Its a win-win for everyone…I know my followers are getting good content with relevant ads of my choosing and I earn a little revenue as well. It also helps rebroadcasters send content they want and not content they are paid to send (because now they can place their own ads on anything).

Blogs and Twitter Team Up in 2009

http://mashable.com/2009/01/04/twitter-blog-design/

From this blog post on Mashable you can see how powerful Twitter is becoming. Some really cool ideas for how Twitter and Blogs will intertwine in 2009. One example I thought of was if you can log in with your twitter account to comment on any blog post then more people will comment creating better overall “conversation and content” on each blog. Reason being is that users will want to leave good comments to impress readers who may then decide to follow that commenting tweeter. If the whole goal is to get more followers on twitter in order to increase your twinfluence, then people will be blowing up blogs with comments, favorite posts, retweets, etc in order to appear in more places. The person with the best blog content still wins here, it just means that your blog can grow bigger a lot faster thanks to Twitter. Find your NICHE based on your TALENTS and you will have your own little galaxy in the Twitterverse. This eventually leads to $$$$ and doing what you love full time.

The Conversations are the Conversion Factor

Social Media Marketing is becoming the final piece in the puzzle of selling a product. You can spend millions creating awareness of a product through mass marketing but when it comes down to it, people are going to turn to their social networks for opinions and product reviews. Its only after checking with their “tribe” online that people will complete the purchase. Even if people don’t have a tribe of people online, they will do a Google search for the product they are comtemplating on buying. Google will then index social conversations about the product and customers will read these discussions from blogs and Twitter posts before deciding on a purchase.  So even if its only a small group of people discussing the product, the ramifications of their discussions can reach millions through google searches.

What is your conversion factor?  Would you rather read reviews from websites (whether you trust their content or not) or would you rather ‘overhear’ conversations from real people concerning products?  Please comment below…
